"The greatest consolation in misfortune is to find compassionate hearts"

On 28 September, at the age of 88 years, we let the director Arthur Penn after a long career filled with success.

"El milagro de Anna Sullivan ( Arthur Penn, 1962) grew out of the autobiography of Helen Keller (1880 - 1960), the exemplary American writer and speaker required to overcome the barriers of blindness and deaf-mutism to succeed in life. Just learning and early experiences were collected in the book "The story of my life" (1903), which served as the screenwriter William Gibson to take the stage and screens (television and cinema) so touching story.

Patty Duke (Helen Keller) and Anne Bancroft (Anna Sullivan)

The interpretive effort conducted by ; Anne Bancroft in the role of the teacher Anna Sullivan , and the very young Patty Duke , won the Oscar as best supporting actress, contributed significantly to the success of this film. Both actresses had performed these same roles on Broadway scenarios in the stage version.

This film begins by showing the little Helen victim of a high fever, perhaps caused by an infectious disease like scarlet fever or meningitis. During his convalescence, his parents, the wealthy landowner Captain Arthur Keller ( Victor Jory) and his young wife Kate Keller (Inga Swenson ) Appalled to discover his little girl is completely blind and deaf.

The Scarlet is caused by Streptococcus pyogenes serogroup A and debuted with a sharp and abrupt fever, accompanied by a characteristic rash of this disease. It usually affects young children between 2 and 10 years of age. Thanks to early treatment with antibiotics today its complications are usually mild.

regard to infectious meningitis, according to its etiology may be viral (more benign), bacterial (more severe) or fungal (more rare). This disease is usually a common cause of fever in infants and children. If left untreated, can leave as sequelae of brain damage.

In this film, Arthur Penn at all times avoids the temptation to give the work a syrupy or moralistic tone, which may well correspond to events such as those that are narrated. The dedicated teacher, marked by his own experience as institutionalized handicapped children, advocates at all times to achieve the independence of the blind girl - deaf and dumb, trying to keep away the feeling of compassion and overprotective family.

Enjoying her scenes, the tenacious struggle conducted by Anna Sullivan to counteract the isolation and aggressiveness of the young Helen reminded us of those epic scenes featuring other bitter rivals, such as D'Hubert (Keith Carradine ) against Feraud (Harvey Keitel ) in "The Duellists" ( Ridley Scott, 1977) or Sean Thornton (John Wayne) against "Red" Danaher (Victor McLaglen ) in "The Quiet Man" ( John Ford, 1952) ...
