PLANTA 4 ª

"We are not lame ... Cojonudos us! "

If memory fails us, from the exceptional " Road " ( Javier Fesser , 2008) by the occurrence of cancer in adolescence had not returned to be addressed in this blog ...

The issue is back in today, due to premiere of "Live Forever" ( Gustavo Ron , 2010), a story starring a 12 year old boy suffering from leukemia.

To roll "Planta 4 ª" ( Antonio Mercer , 2003), veteran writer and director include the claustrophobic "The Cabin" (1972) and hit television series "Verano azul" , was based on "The bald" , autobiographical play Albert Espinosa, who battled cancer from 14 to 24 years.

Antonio Mercer

As its title suggests, the plot develops in a child trauma hospital facility where inmates are several teenagers who suffer the consequences of traffic accidents and various tumors.

One of the protagonists is Juan José Ballesta, which was released in the cinema thanks to his outstanding work in award-winning "El Bola" ( Achero Mañas, 2000). In "4th Floor" plays Michelangelo, a cheerful, mischievous lad who has just had a leg amputee due to a tibial osteosarcoma.

He is accompanied on his adventures other children also affected by two osteosarcomas, Izan ( Luis Ángel Priego ), Dani ( Gorka Moreno ) and Guillermo ( Marcos Cedillo), alias " Cucumber," which will run worse luck than their peers, because when you are diagnosed bone cancer he will have already spread in the form of multiple lung metastases ... Recall that the distance from osteosarcoma relapse does not usually respond to chemotherapy and has very poor prognosis.

OSTEOSARCOMA

is the most common bone cancer in youth, the average age at diagnosis is 15 years. In late adolescence, the prevalence is higher in males. Although it may affect any bone, is more common in the epiphysis of long bones like tibia and femur (both locations near the knee) and proximal humerus (near the shoulder). In these ways, the screenplay for the film closely follows the reality.

From the pathological point of view are classified into osteogenic , predominantly atypical osteocytes forming osteoid bone and osteolytic , tumors less differentiated osteoclasts predominantly causing necrosis and bone destruction.

osteogenic Osteosarcoma

The most common symptoms are fractures (even may occur spontaneously), pain and local inflammation , and some functional disability (which can cause lameness if the tumor is located in the leg).

Confirmation of the diagnosis is made by biopsy . In the film, Jorge ( Alejandro Zafra ) is a boy who entered the hospital on suspicion of having a bone tumor. After suffering a motorcycle accident, radiographs revealed a radiolucent area in one of its warm ...

FILM ...

The scenes of this film were shot in the Hospital Príncipe de Asturias de Alcalá de Henares . Regarding treatment, Izan and Michelangelo have suffered amputations paths due to the reluctance of osteogenic implant that once were used to treat disease. Dani, however, rejected the implant, but has yet to complete courses of treatment with chemotherapy .

In the movie there is a very revealing scene. The uncompromising Dr. Gallego (Miguel Foronda), more critical of the antics of the boys that Dr. Marcos (Monti Castiñeiras our Galician !) Informs Dani, Izan and Miguel Angel of death of the late Guillermo. We note that the fear and rejection of chemotherapy is common among these patients, not at all willing to support the alopecia, general decay, nausea, vomiting and infertility caused by cytotoxic drugs (cisplatin, cyclophosphamide, ifosfamide, methotrexate with high-dose leucovorin and doxorubicin).

Castiñeiras Monti is Dr. Mark

While Michelangelo is the trauma that causes the disease and the strange relationship of love - hate against her father, Izan puts all his hopes on the biomechanical prosthesis that will allow you to keep a normal life once you left the hospital. Parallel to this, we also witness the love story which stars Daniel and Gloria ( Maite Jáuregui ) a young woman with anorexia admitted to the psychiatric facility, a sentiment that will serve as an engine to continue fighting their illnesses ...

to seal their commitment to the girl, Dani will give away one of the wristbands that looks at your wrist, as a valuable trophies of war: each operation, a bracelet ... The more bracelets, the more seniority, and further suffering.

How cancer than adolescents hospitalized? Is it Antonio real drama Mercero us in this film? Then they get through friendship, solidarity, love, music, sports, imagination, humor and fantasy, is there really the model of your dreams Miguel Angel? ...

From our humble perspective, we support the medical and educational value of this work, we attend as spectators to the particular microcosm (a fashion of McMurphy in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest ") generated within the walls of a health center, cold, aseptic impersonal, and how the ingenuity of these young patients allows them to survive the environment, enduring the pain of his illness and that of their peers.

cinephilia :

  • Izan 's character's last name is Espinosa, representing the alter ego Albert Espinosa, author of the play in which inspired the film ...

  • All the kids are fans of "Estopa" , involved in the final performance in the hospital gym.
