Does some validity in the year 2010 "The great feast" ( Marco Ferreri, 1973 ), one of the most controversial and iconoclastic films of his time?
The original script, written in tandem between itself Ferreri and Rafael Azcona , great English writer and winner recently disappeared, tells the story of four friends standing in a Parisian house of Rue Boileau who decide to put an end to their lives in an orgy of food and sex. Served as master of ceremonies the exuberant Andrea (Andréa Ferreol), the only surviving nymphomaniac so huge orgy.
Much has been written about this controversial film since its premiere, critics have found in it a crucible of shades, from satire irreverent consumer society, through an underground advocacy of suicide or an obscene expression of scatology and bad taste, to a decaying monument to nihilism. However, today we bring to reflect on this blog about so-called diseases of affluence .
Because in a world like ours, although many more neighbors die of hunger than satiety, it is shown that eating certain types of non-negligible cause diseases in humans.
The informative editorial in English "Seven Days Doctors" for the October 27, 2006, regarding the Congress of Nutrition and Public Health held in Barcelona in those days, we warned of the two major epidemics that we are living on our planet: the undernutrition and overnutrition . Concerning this second condition, experts warn that obesity among English children has doubled in the last 20 years, with a dismal treatment outcome, since success is only obtained in 30% of cases. The actual translation of these data implies that 2 out of 3 English children will remain obese in adulthood ...
From the first pages of his book "Stuffed and Starved" , professor and economist Raj Patel showed us a great contradiction: despite the fact that humanity is producing more food than in its entire history, 10% of the world population suffering from hunger ...
If we are allowed to leave, we would put "The great feast" in the cross of a plump coin whose face would earn its simple but joyful "Babette's Feast" ( Gabriel Axel, 1987 ), much more uplifting and supportive narrative of another great treat.

As usual in this blog, special mention to the melancholy soundtrack, the work of the prolific French composer Philippe Sarde . CHARACTERS
Ugo (Ugo Tognazzi ) is a restaurateur who runs an establishment impotent in Paris called "Le biscuit à soupe" . Lacking for the occasion of his trademark mustache, in the opening scenes of the film we see the immense Italian actor lovingly prepared your case well stocked kitchen knives.
Next discord is the character of Michel (Michel Piccoli ), a television producer mannered aerofagia affected, with an evening of fascination towards the third component of the group of friends, Marcello (the always incomparable Marcello Mastroianni) aviation commander so obsessed with sex as run an old Bugatti damaged, hopeless resignation that seems to have been his last and final landing.
quartet of Swingers Complete Philippe (Philippe Noiret , another colossus of European cinema), a timid judge still dependent on his elderly housekeeper (and breeding!).
MENU
I've heard it said Professor Jose Enrique Campillo , Professor of Physiology the University Extremadura, that our hominid ancestors usually thrived from about 250 foods, while we, modern men and women, do the same with just a dozen dishes. Unwittingly, the stars of "The great feast" comes to contradict the research scholar.
Before our astonished eyes parade heads of calves, piglets and pigs tender carcasses, wild boar, deer, goats, poultry, oysters, seafood, vegetables of various colors and textures, purees, organ meats, herbs, meats, eggs, bread, croissants and other pastries, fruit, orange juice, potatoes, pasta, cheese and other dairy products, wine, champagne, cakes and desserts enormous artistic, liqueurs, to the nutritious marrow fills the marrow bones of cattle .. in the overall calorie count is hard to imagine, more worthy of the huge players in "Gargantua and Pantagruel" of François Rabelais (1494 - 1553) that a few mere mortals. DEATH
The stars will disappear from the scene one by one, in reality, so did while filming the movie, which was made in chronological order. Mastroianni was the first to leave the film set, as his character dies frozen in the garden sitting at the controls of his pampered Bugatti azzurro.

The second is Michel Piccoli, who literally dies trapping unable to withstand enormous pressure bowels caused by the accumulation of gases and feces that it obstructed.
Then came the turn of Ugo, who may leave this world because of an acute myocardial infarction , earned cardiovascular event due to priming and relentless efforts of the lustful Andrea, determined to cure his impotence. Philippe Noiret
A touch him die alone, surrounded by their dogs and into the arms of Andrea, embarrassment to the final annihilation, surrendered at last to a suggestive pink dessert in the shape of huge female breasts.
CINEFAGIA
- According to the testimony of Ugo Tognazzi, the four players met to discuss (and to digest!) In a small upstairs rooms of the house where they filmed the film. One day, among all shattered the script and threw it in Marco Ferreri. Improvisation has since been the line of work to follow them. This was also the interviews CoroBore made it to Michel Piccoli. Thus arose, for example, the scene in which the very convincingly mimics Tognazzi Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone , the famous protagonist of "The Godfather" (Francis Ford Coppola , 1972) .. .
- heeding mismísmo Tognazzi, gourmet perhaps as good as an actor, the stars of this film had to give a good account of the list of meats, oysters, pate de canard , boar pate , shrimp cocktail, c avian d'Aubergine salad Nicoise , lasagna Andrea, bortsch Russian, suckling pig and pork spiedo chestnut stuffing, mashed potatoes, roasted Guinea hen, pissaladière provençale , osobucos giant leg of lamb or spiedo Solognotte ... Those interested in drawing up such a pittance hearty recipes can be found in the attached link:
- Dishes displayed in this film were prepared by Fauchon - Paris , with the advice of the multifaceted actor and writer Giuseppe Maffioli (1925 - 1985). Not to be confused with the famous Italian chef of the same name!.

As a postscript, not to cut the digestion, add this scene "The Meaning of Life" ( Terry Jones, 1983), the iconoclastic fourth film Monty Python , in which the insatiable Mr. Creosote (played by Terry Jones own ) literally explodes after swallowing a hearty meal ...
