Lars And The Real Girl

We celebration. Third Anniversary this blog that aims to scrutinize the tapes and watch films from the perspective of the cameras how sick and heal human beings in the fiction of the screens. Still enjoying a hot summer, so we chose today commemorative special film, whose action takes us to the frigid Canadian winter landscapes.

"Lars and the Real Girl" ( Craig Gillespie, 2007), written by Nancy Oliver , proposes an original story, fantastic, improbable and funny, although more or less bizarre love affair between one male and one female have been treated artificial
in the world of 7 th Art perspectives very personal and very different results, such as in "Life Size" ( Luis García Berlanga , 1973) or in the latest "Air Doll " (Hirokazu Koreeda , 2009) .

Michel Piccoli, a passion for latex

"Air Doll, sex doll contemporary

However, in the work of Gillespie's desire is absent. Rather might speak of a love lyric, pure and spiritual. critic Antonio Weinrichter from the pages of ABC , described in his day as "a comedy caste, soft and melancholy," while Jordi Costa of The Country , regarded as a comedy "very black."

Other criticisms of this additional information is available at:

From the medical point of view , this would be a pathological case delusional. Canadian actor Ryan Gosling convincingly embodies Lars Lindstrom, a lonely, introverted boy who has difficulty relating to others. For example, shy away from physical contact, hugs, feeling that they burn. Gosling's interpretation is very commendable, because it enriches the character with a series of gestures and tics endowed with a manifest
naturally. Lars

could perhaps have a mild form of dissociative disorder - autism or bipolar disorder even . His mother died after giving birth, and with his older brother
Gus (Paul Schneider ) grew under the care of a puritanical and authoritarian father. For shelter, Lars keeps around his neck a scarf of the newborn, apparently woven by his mother while she was pregnant with him. As a permanent umbilical cord that is the emotional bond that keeps him attached to it.

Ryan Gosling gets a very special portrait of Lars

One of the most interesting of this movie is the Dr. Dagmar (Patricia Clarkson ) family physician with extensive training in psychology that serves the community. She does not think that Lars is suffering from schizophrenia or psychosis, or that your have a genetic disorder or organic brain.

Patricia Clarkson is Dr. Dagmar

As therapy "family and community" recommends Dr. Gus and wife Karin
(Emily Mortimer ) that follow the current Lars, it seems to project on the wrist Bianca their feelings, concerns and aspirations. In some ways, latex girl becomes the silent voice of the tormented mind of his young boyfriend. And for Dr. Dagmar this very singular becomes a sort of treatment once retracted Lars.

In the waiting room ...

Experts say a delusion must meet certain requirements, which differ, for example from another rate more or less heterodox beliefs. Thus, a delusion is an unshakable idea is based on an approach inappropriate. Lars builds his delirium on a latex doll he has given the name, nationality (Brazilian-Danish origin, dark and beautiful, different from the women around them), past, personality ... Lars addresses the impossibility of displacing idea Bianca in a wheelchair, or eating the food she can not swallow. With the help of his small community, Lars delusion extends thanks to the humanitarian protection of their environment (family, doctors, friends, church).

Gus rationality, convinced of the folly of his brother and the need for therapeutic placement, collides with the conservative positions and charitable Karin, Dr. Dagmar and the rest of the community, worthy of a screenplay
the most bondadodo Frank Capra. In the shadow, perhaps in love with Lars and waiting for healing, waiting for the fragile and immature Margo (Kelli Garner ).

Lars Restoring inevitably lead to the disappearance of Bianca.

CINEFAGIA

  • There is a scene able to condense the philosophy of this film, when Lindstrom leave the church services, the compassionate Mrs. Gruner (Nancy Beatty ) Bianca gives him a basket full of flowers. Lars is on his girlfriend siliciona and whispers in his ear: " are nice huh?, Not really, last forever ..."
  • Bianca Lars reads an excerpt of "Don Quixote" , that immortal delusional illusion called loved Dulcinea ...
  • During the filming of the movie, the doll Bianca was treated as an actress again, having its own trailer where he was dressed and prepared for the scenes that had to participate.

PATCH ADAMS

"Our job is to improve health ... means improving the quality of life, not just delaying death."

Patch Adams, Truman, en "Patch Adams"

Patch Adams Is an eccentric, a pacifist, a madman, a buffoon, a charlatan, a visionary, a revolutionary, a visionary ...?, or maybe a doctor constructed from a special alloy and resistant? It seems that during their academic qualifications obtained in the Faculty of Medicine of Virginia were exceptional ... therefore, from the orthodoxy of Chairs us give the benefit of the doubt.

One of the virtues of the film is to change reality. Therein lies its magic. So entertain us, fascinates us, seduces us. When
see a movie based on a book and then reread its pages, the look of the characters will move in our literary imagination, such identification being changed forever. For these reasons so subtle became Tarzan Johnny Weissmuller , Superman Christopher Reeve in , Don Vito Corleone in Marlon Brando, in Dracula Bela Lugosi , Josef Mengele in Gregory Peck and Patch Adams Robin Williams in . Completely reverse process occurred with Charlot, for example, because Charles Chaplin has become inextricably metamorphosed into its endearing character.

met the real Patch Adams in anecdotal circumstances. After listening for three hours an endless debate of experts on the treatment of hypertension, a stormy headache caused me much discomfort that kept me distracted. Then
Dr. Adams made his appearance, stealthy. Indeed, it seemed the antithesis of Robin Williams, very high (1.93 to 1.73 meters in front of the actor), dressed in a bizarre (his usual uniform to provoke emotions), blue hair tied in a long ponytail and a mustache with twisted ends up. Lobe of his left ear hung a fork-shaped pendant ...

The real Patch Adams

Un calor tedioso atenazaba the hall, the audience, comprised mostly of physicians, did not seem to be too much for the work. My headache disappeared when I concentrated on a short video showing a Patch Adams Park Arequipa (Peru ) following a small with cerebral palsy sitting in a wheelchair. Suddenly, I understood his message, the central idea on which the film deals "Patch Adams" ( Tom Shadyac, 1998), a simple maximum perhaps too often forgotten because of our daily professional negligence, and is almost we inadvertently used to treat diseases and not sick.

Greeting the Patch Adams-style

The greatest sin of modern medicine lies in their dehumanization. The patients were converted to numbers, codes, are pigeonholed in diseases such compartments where compassion is absent, while the only important thing are the numbers, waiting lists, average times, length of hospital stays, budgeting, expenditure on medicines ... Upon entering a hospital, we lose our essence, our individuality, becoming the most helpless prisoners of anonymity. And primary care, often with the complicity involuntary patients themselves also neglected its main responsibility, as everyone seems to have forgotten the meaning of health and quality of life.

FILM

Indeed, Patch Adams was not too happy with the result same, especially the difference between their fees and Robin Williams took home in his pockets ... In his own words, while the film helped to popularize its modus operandi , has not brought greater benefits to your project: building a free hospital entertaining and original in the middle of the forests of Pocahontas County , in West Virginia.

screenplay by Steve Oederkerk , based on the book "Gesundheit: Good Health is a Laughing Matter" , written by the Patch Adams and Maureen Mylander . She is the coauthor of "
Gesundheit! ", a second book written by Dr. Adams and defined as the first bestseller behind the film. The original edition has helped me to collect from the first some of these information sources, such as veracity of the scene of the movie Patch Adams which fills a room with balloons, so the people inside, still unable to see, perceive perfectly the movement of the other "guests".

Children and Patch Adams's adolescence was marked for death: first, the father's military career veteran of World War II and Korea, the victim of a stress disorder disorder and died of a heart attack. The father figure was replaced by an uncle, who unfortunately end up committing suicide.

pacth was a sickly boy, hit by a terrible peptic ulcers (based on treated Gelusil ®, Librium ® and Rubinol ® ). dropped out of school and voluntarily entered a psychiatric institution, the Fairfax Hospital in Virginia. It is true that in the wake of that particular experience (living in the same room with Rudy, a psychiatric patient) found "light", ie the immense healing power of love, communication and fun. Decided to become a "student of life", a kind of healing sociologist interested in the infinite variability of human behavior. Another reliable data that appears in the film is the experiment carried out by Patch Adams, indiscriminately calling wrong numbers on the phone to talk to people, or spontaneity initiated talks with strangers on the street, in bars, even in elevators in public buildings. Heeding his own words, was to attend both meetings of the Ku Klux Klan as those of the Black Muslims , trying to understand their ideas ...

addition to studying medicine, his self-training led him to read the works of the classics, from Plato and other Greek philosophers to the masters of world literature as William Faulkner or Thomas Mann. And also read Nikos Kazantzakis , especially "Zorba the Greek" . In our memory now comes the exceptional performance that Anthony Quinn was of such vital character in "Zorba the Greek" ( Michael Cacoyannis , 1964).

According to Dr. Adams himself, cinema and literature have served to know the idiosyncrasies of other countries. In the case of Spain , confessed his fondness for the works of Pedro Almodovar and Alejandro Amenabar , in our humble opinion exceptional artists, but with a very personal vision of reality that may inevitably distort ... With regard to professional models of university stage, Patch Adams confessed devotee doctors Albert Schweitzer ("in honor of his impressive mustache?) and Thomas A. Dooley .

Dr. Albert Schweitzer

Dr. Thomas A. Dooley

Perhaps the film has damaged the ontology of Patch Adams, perhaps focusing on precision (Patch did not graduate with her ass in the air) and funny anecdotes to attract the viewer into the lockers. He probably represents only a charlatan, an egotist, a excétrico or a visionary. But for some of us, this film has helped to discover a very special colleague, offered us humanize our profession, awakening our consciences ossified devastating truths, real punches innocent camouflaged under the influence of a red clown nose.

On this movie there is a highly recommended test signed by Steven C. Scheer in his book "Hollywood Values" , available at the following link:

CINEFAGIA

In the movie, Patch Adams knows Corinne Fisher (Monica Potter ), a fellow faculty turn out to be his girlfriend. This character never exitsió in reality, but is inspired by Linda Edquist , the true wife of the protagonist.

Like any public figure and famous, Patch Adams has not managed to steer clear of controversy. Linda was married to him for 26 years and had two children, but are now divorced. Patch Adams has left the practice of medicine and has turned to its recreational and therapeutic movement trying to raise funds for the hospital "comic" Linda says it has raised more than a million dollars ... He says he has never earned a cent from the practice of medicine ...

Perhaps inspired similar proposals, there are movements featuring doctors and other professionals seeking to create a warm and humane environment for inpatients, such as the Red Ball Doctors:

And like any film that is provided, the real Dr. Hunter Patch Adams also made a cameo, appearing to the public listening to the allegation that the protagonist does in his own defense against those who want to prevent graduation.

Mid-August Lunch

"We live in memories, right Grazia?, What would you do if you had no memories?"

Thanks to "The getaway" ( Dino Risi, 1962)
, il ferragosto discovered, the holiday Italian each year commemorates the traditional end of farming for August 15. That same day, wandering around a deserted Rome, the urgent and vital Bruno Cortona (Vittorio Gassman immeasurable ) drags the timid student Roberto Mariani law (Jean-Louis Trintignant ) on a journey convertible end in tragedy ...

Gassman and Trintignant in "Il sorpasso" (Dino Risi, 1962)

The versatile Gianni di Gregorio is the director, co-writer and main actor "ferragosto holiday " (2008), a simple comedy can emerge in our lips a pious smile .

The argument is simple. Gianni is a bachelor who lives in Rome with Valeria (Valeria Franciscis ), her elderly mother. Heavy smoker and devotee of white wine, has accepted his resignation live daily routine. Seems satisfied and happy, but has gradually built up a series of debts to the neighboring community, a commitment which will be forgiven by Alfonso (Alfonso Santagata ), the communal administrator, in exchange for their care Gianni mother Marina (Marina Caccioti ) and Aunt Mary his ( Mary Calì ) during ferragosto.

The plot is still a bit more tangled when Marcello (Marcello Ottolenghi ), doctor and friend of Gianni also requests assumes responsibility for such a particular day of his mother Grazia (Grazia Cesarini Sforza ), the physician is on duty at the hospital and the current caregiver of the elderly has traveled to Romania ...

How any of us would act if, suddenly, we had to attend to 4 elderly? Gianni is an unfortunate, because the old women's health is much better than his own: the doctor has diagnosed hypertension and stable angina .

Valeria's flirtatious grooms every day with great decorum ... Aunt Mary have cerebral arteriosclerosis, but continues to prepare the best Italian baked pasta ... The stubborn Navy flight at night to drink and smoke in bars. The wins bring Gianni gets back home barely, a feat that cost is also a good drunk ... Finally, the fragile Grazia is allergic to lactose, you should take amlodipine to treat your hypertension and domperidone for functional dyspepsia ... Looking

raw material for cooking food ferragosto, with the help of his trusty Viking ( Luigi Marchetti ) Gianni motorcycle travels the streets of the Eternal City semidesert, reminding those other films featuring rides in his day Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in "Roman Holiday" ( William Wyler, 1953) or the emotional Nanni Moretti in "Caro Diario" (1993).

Critics agree in highlighting the kindness with which Gianni di Gregorio portrays the elderly, far from the stereotypes that older people consider a nuisance or a burden.

We see Valerie does not like to imagine the musketeer D'Artagnan as described in its pages Alexandre Dumas, as Grazia recalls with nostalgia the homes that have lived throughout his life, as Tia Maria Gianni helps make dinner or Navy wants to sing a lullaby to her caregiver to sleep ...
